Early Inspiration:

Crafting beautiful quilts is more than just a hobby for Sherry, it’s a passion ignited in her youth. “Sherry, can you tell us about your initial interest in quilting? Did a specific person or experience spark your passion?” she replies, “Absolutely! It all began when my children were toddlers. I was fortunate to have my mother-in-law teach me quilting, but sadly, she passed away as we were just getting started.”

Learning and Growth:

Despite this initial setback, Sherry’s determination to learn the craft grew stronger. “Following the loss of your mother-in-law, how did you find the support and knowledge to continue your quilting journey?” we ask. “I found a wonderful quilting guild in Columbus, Georgia,” she explains, “The patient help of kind older friends there truly helped me learn so much. I even took my first formal quilting class at a shop there, and that’s when I knew quilting was something I wanted to dedicate myself to.”

Her journey then took an unexpected turn. “You mentioned venturing into commercial quilting for a while. What made you decide to transition back to the artistic side of quilting?” We inquire. Sherry smiles, “The opportunity to buy a Gammill quilter locally sparked a new chapter. I used it for commercial purposes, making custom bed covers for a while. But quilting itself held a stronger allure, and with my background in sewing and alterations, exploring the artistic side felt incredibly fulfilling.”

Teaching and Sharing the Craft:

Sherry’s passion for quilting extends beyond creation. “Sharing your knowledge seems to be a big part of your quilting experience. How did you get started teaching quilting classes?” we ask. “It all started with a request to teach a beginner’s class at Troy University’s Continuing Education Department,” she replies. “That was nearly 25 years ago, and it launched my teaching career! Now, I offer a variety of classes at my shop, Quilted Creations, including Basic Sewing and Quilting, Block of the Month Quilts, Kid’s Camp sessions, and even special classes and retreats.”

The variety in her curriculum piques our curiosity. “From basic sewing to kid’s camps and specialized classes, you offer a diverse learning experience. What inspires you to create such a curriculum?” Sherry explains, “I believe quilting should be accessible to everyone, regardless of age or experience. My classes cater to quilters of all levels, and I find immense joy in nurturing a love for this art form in new generations.”

Expertise in Quilt History and Appraisal:

Sherry’s knowledge extends far beyond creating beautiful quilts. “What drew you to study antique quilts and their history?” we ask. “My love for antiques and my husband’s interest in history were a big influence,” she replies. “Realizing the historical significance of quilts fueled my desire to learn more.”

This passion for preservation led her down another path. “Having witnessed the loss of a quilt collection firsthand, you now offer appraisal services. Can you elaborate on the importance of documenting and insuring cherished quilts?” we inquire. Sherry’s expression turns serious. “Sadly, a friend lost her entire quilt collection in a fire,” she says. “This experience highlighted the need for proper documentation and insurance. Many of us have quilts with sentimental value, and these steps can ensure their protection.”

Her dedication to the quilting community goes beyond her local classes. “Your involvement with the American Quilt Society and Study Group demonstrates a dedication to the quilting community. What value do you find in being part of these organizations?” Sherry explains, “These organizations provide a wealth of knowledge and resources. Being part of them allows me to connect with other quilting enthusiasts, share my knowledge, and continuously learn and grow as a quilter.”

Looking Forward:

With such a remarkable quilting journey, we can’t help but ask, “Sherry, do you have any exciting projects or endeavors you’d like to share with our readers?” Her eyes sparkle with enthusiasm. “Absolutely! I’m always looking for new ways to share my love of quilting. Stay tuned for upcoming workshops and exciting announcements at Quilted Creations!”
